In business since 1997 for the provision of Telecommunications and Computing solutions.

Welcome to my page on the Village Business web site.

My name is David Oliver, I have lived in Bishops Lydeard since December 2002 and am pleased to offer the services of my company to the local community.

What does the company do?

Essentially DataScion is set up to provide bespoke computing solutions. I don’t sell equipment. If your difficulties lie in getting at your data in a form appropriate to you, perhaps in MSExcel, MSAccess or similar then give me a call.

Alternatively if you wish to develop an application for your own personal or business uses, I would be happy to discuss the requirements. (For example a department of the Social Services in Bedford has been contentedly running a database application I created for them 11 years ago and more recently a contacts database has been set up for a company based in Somerset.)

What should you do?

What qualifications and experience can DataScion draw on?

I formed DataScion as a second career, this time in computing, after retiring from a senior management position in Cable and Wireless plc. As such, I am still interested in telecommunications work, e.g. the design of systems or through a consultancy. My experience is broadly based and supported professionally as a European Engineer (Eur Ing.), a Chartered Engineer (C/Eng.) and as a Member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology. (M.I.E.T.). – previously the I.E.E. I have recently retired from being a member of the Chartered Management Institute (MCMI).

I built up my qualifications for computing work by gaining a full time MSc in computing science at Birkbeck College of the University of London in 1996/7 after acquiring a scholarship from the I.E.E.

Some of my recent computing activities were in support of T-Mobile and lay in the remote interrogation of multiple databases used for the control of telecommunications equipment. I created numerous reports for extracting data through unplanned relationships and searching for configuration errors, whilst also identifying unused telecommunications capacity. A lot of this work was performed in MSAccess and Business Objects.

Software programming skills include, but are not limited to C, C++ and Java and also include the creation of macros and applications utilising the component parts of Microsoft Office Professional along with Visual Basic. Hardware experience covers the usual PCs, Networks and peripherals on typical small business systems along with the maintenance and configuration of these.
